Onan has a long history when it comes to generator sets. The founder of Onan, D.W. (David) Onan, was born in 1886 and started his business in 1920 from his house. Due to his entrepreneurship, David Onan was mainly active in the field of electrical systems for cars and later on also generators. The first generator which he developed was equipped with a Briggs & Stratton engine and became later on known as “ten-lite” as it had an output to power 10 35W lights
In 1992 the Onan Corporation became a fully owned subsidiary of the Cummins Engine Company (now Cummins Inc.) becoming a the world's largest designer and manufacturer of diesel engines ranging from 55- to 2,700-horsepower. Cummins is for instance also owner of Newage Stamford (generators) and Fleetguard (filters).
In 2000 Onan celebrated their 80 year existence. Currently Onan is market leader in many disciplines. Onan has a approx. 85% market share in America in de RV/commercial generators. These generators are available as petrol generator, LPG generator or diesel generator. Every year about 100.000 RV / commercial generators leave the factory.
But also in the field of Marine generators Onan is “Leading the Way” with outputs from 4-100 kW. Onan is preferred supplier for many well known OEM’s such as Princess, Fairline, Jeanneau, Beneteau, Linssen Neptune Marine, etc, etc.
There are more suppliers of mobile generators (Mastervolt, Fischer Panda, Vetus, Westerbeke, Northern Lights) but only one can be the best. The Onan Marine Generator has been chosen best generator for the second year in a row in the “Great Atlantic Gear” test. The Onan 7 kW even had the highest score of all the on board equipment.
